“Cramming” means trying to study a lot of material the night before an exam. But trying to remember everything an hour before a test is almost impossible: so cramming is not a good idea. Instead, a better alternative is to study or take in little by little at a time. Many courses cover a huge amount of information, so you need a longer amount of time to review it all. Studying a week before the exam is usually a good strategy. It’s never too early to start studying. You can begin by reviewing the textbook and then your notes; then, you can think of potential exam questions and formulate study notes. On the study notes, summarize all of the key definitions, concepts and integrate examples. Highlight anything that you don’t understand and ask your teacher early. Don’t wait until the day before the exam to do this, because your teacher will be reluctant to help you then. Studying early will help you with consolidating the material into your memory better and leave enough time for questions.
How do you prepare for tests/exams?

I write out all my notes by hand and then meet with my friends for a study group.

I think it’s best to study as you go. If every week you review a bit of what you covered previously, you are better able to retain the information.

Advanced preparation is the best. No matter how effective other preparation techniques are, they are in someway insufficient.

Start preparing 7 days before the exams, complete the revision of the course in 5 days then do sample papers for 2 days so you know where you stand.

Learning throughout the year is good as you cant go through all the topics in a day. And even if you succeed you won’t be able to reproduce it in the exam.
Comment by ast728 on February 27, 2013 at 6:01 pm
If you actually pay attention in class, you don’t need to study.

I always crammed, which worked well for me, but I attended all my lectures so I had a good understanding of course material in advance.

As a master’s student, I no longer have ANY tests or exams! 😀

Studying for multiple exams should also be mentioned here. Having the ability to manage your time and study for 3-4 exams will also determine if you do well on the exams.

One piece of advice that I learned as as student is that if youw ant to feel calm when having pre-exam nervousness or “jitters” is to eat a piece of cheddar cheese. It really does have a calming effect!

Flash cards are great for remembering definitions and concepts! Copying slides that that professors give out and/or your notes by hand is also a great way to help you remember.

Read the textbook, underline important ideas, look through examples, and solve problems. Studying in a group also helps, with some subjects and enough times.
Comment by ctp101 on August 2, 2013 at 7:24 am
Read the lecture notes and textbook together to understand the concepts and answer related questions to understand the implementation of the concept. These steps need to always be done from the beginning of the semester and last minute study will not suffice for good understanding of the subject material
Comment by ctp102 on August 2, 2013 at 9:32 am
Re-read my lecture notes and write them out again. Also, I like to study with my classmates.
Comment by ctp100 on August 2, 2013 at 11:35 pm
It depends, sometimes I can start preparing early but if there were a lot of assignments at the same time, sometimes, cramming everything one night is the only way.
So study last year material final exam is one of the most efficient way to get straight to the problem, although it is recommended only when you are in desperation. 🙂

Cramming is very bad, it just leads to blanking on the exam!
Comment by ctp110 on August 19, 2013 at 7:29 am
Cramming is a skill learned over time.
