As your schooling becomes more advanced, you have more freedom to control your own life. This is particularly true if you move away from your family. You can consider pursuing different interests and trying new things. There are many opportunities both at the school or college, and within the community. Join a group, join a team, volunteer for something, attend a concert, go to the gym, take up a new hobby, make new friends, go out with friends — all of these are perfectly valuable and important things to do. The school newspaper is often a great place to find out what is happening around campus. Your first job while at school is to focus on studying, but studying will be easier if you have balance in your life. Extra-curricular activities (depending on the type) can also be helpful later when applying for jobs and scholarships — decision-makers often want to see that you can balance your life and be active in your community. The key is to not allow the socializing and extra-curricular activities to hurt your grades. Time management is important. With nothing but studying, it’s easy to let things drag on because you’re so tired and there’s no reward at the end. It’s often easier to work hard for the next 3 hours to finish an assignment knowing that you have something fun to do in the evening.
What is your best tip for balancing work and fun at school?

My tip for balancing work and fun would be to always be aware of upcoming deadlines and plan ahead so that even if you feel like going out a lot, you know which days are okay to go out and which days you definitely will not have time to

My tip would be to do whatever you enjoy. You would ultimately be able to balance both work and fun in this manner.

My tip is to treat school like a job– it has a schedule and requires a certain number of hours to be put in each day or week. If you can stick to this type of routine, you’ll be able to find time for leisure every day and be better able to plan in advance for non-school activities. I think this is preferable to the ‘binge and purge’ approach– you’ll end up having to miss out on big things if you keep putting off work in favor of little things.

This is a very nice set of tips, wish i had seen them a few years ago 🙂
balance and scheduling does help quite a bit.
If you are a morning person i would suggest that you try to get up at around 5 am, do a small jog or a stretching session at home and start your day. You will be surprised at how much time you have in the rest of the day to do whatever you want….

The best tip for balancing work and fun is effective time management.

Don’t worry about your grades. Concentrate on learning. Whether that be by means of extra-curricular activities or class.

It’s important to balance work and life, so there will be a lot free time
Comment by rtp109 on July 26, 2013 at 8:45 am
Extra curricular activities can also be school related such as PASS sessions or the debate club, which can also aid in your studying, improve vital skills as well as look good on your resume. But don’t forget to do fun things too for de-stressing.
As well, never procrastinate. I find it extremely helpful if you make a schedule and budget your time for studying and fun accordingly. Also, helpful hint: Whenever you budget your time, you always underestimate how much time you need to work on an assignment. So always double what you initially have planned for working on that assignment.

I think the comment about splitting your day in half is very useful along with this blog post. Also, the best places to make friends, if you’re an introvert like me, is usually the classroom.

Create a timetable, making sure that studying is prioritized first, with any fun activities last. Balance everything.

Very useful tip, it’s not good to be too focused on one thing and become bored with it. You won’t do as well. Doing a variety of things and having some fun sometimes will help in the future.

How do you define work? How do you define fun? Those can be quite subjective. Also, one may have drastically different answers depending on their level of studies. Also, when one moves away from the family one may often have more costs, and so if one does not want to go into debt then one may end up having much less free time, much more burdens and so forth. Hence it’s always important to keep an open mind, as things can go in multiple ways depending on one’s positionality.

a tip that someone opnce told me is that university life is that that that of a triangle. if you can find the balance between social life, studying and sleep – you can succeed, everyone is different and you just have to find the balance that works for you.

a good tip for keeping a balance is utilizing calendars and agendas available on all your devices, helps to keep track of everything you need to do, and also allows you to plan any time needed for relaxing or having fun.

It is important to have a balanced life, being an all-rounded people, as student life is not just about studying. Some life skills like decision making, cannot be learn in class. Experience teach us to do that.

Make sure you stay in sync with yourself. When you feel yourself getting tired from studying, maybe this is the perfect chance to go to an activity. It can be a great break and an opportunity to maintain that school life balance. I would also recommend suggesting to others your plans to explore the city or try new activities. Having friends who are on the same page as you will be encouragement to get your work done and to have some fun after.

It’s definitely important to have that balance. I wasn’t a part of any extracurricular activities my first year of college, and I definitely felt more stress and unhappiness due that fact. It was only when I balanced out the work with fun, after-school activities that I felt well-rounded and happy.

In college you definitely have to make time to relax or else it will come to haunt you later on. You will definitely have days were you wont want to do anything but sleep or even just do nothing becasue you work so hard.

I’ve always found that what works best for me is to make a schedule and try to stick to it. I seem to do best by having daily routines. It doesn’t always work out, but that’s ok you just do the best you can.

The main point according to me is time management. You will find yourself swamped with courseload. Unless one prioritizes his tasks, its very difficult to balance work and fun.

You have to balance your sleep too!

Find a student job, make friends with as many people in the department. This will help you when you graduate if you need a job or it could turn into a full time job.
