When students leave their families to go away to school, they often gain a significant amount of weight. This phenomenon is often referred to as the “freshman 15”, since the weight gain usually happens in the students first (or freshman) year.
Reasons for the freshman 15 are numerous. Going away to school often means living in dorms or residence, where food is typically less healthy than what you ate at home, and is available at all hours. Students are often less active than they were at home. School usually involves hectic academic and social lives that can leave little time for exercise.
What kind of advice would you give to new students about staying healthy when they go away to school?

When they go away from home, they have to make up a routine to get up early so that they will hungry to eat breakfast. Also the routine should include some jogging or walking with friends in morning and playing some sports in the evening. If they eat after getting hungry definitely they will not put weight!!

Make sure your normal, daily life includes exercise. Plan to walk to class, for example. You shouldn’t be dependent on hitting the gym to get some movement in your life.

To ensure that one doesnt put on weight, one must make sure that he gets adequate amount of physical activity during the day. Living on fruits and veggies can be a boon!

Don’t over eat, try to eat more fruits, as they give more energy and less fat, do some workout for at-least 30 min everyday.

Jogging and brisk walking are good calorie burners for students.

The food provided in hostels may not be so healthy because of the chemicals they use in it.the only advice is that control your weight and do ample exercise to maintain a stable proportion of height-weight.

Students should learn to wake up early in their morning and to take their breakfast without fail as it is very essential and to carry lunch and snacks.

If you are eating in a dining hall, it would be good to exercise portion control. Grab everything you want to eat in the proper portions and try to not go back and munch on more just because it’s a buffet style. This will help with intake and reduce overeating. Dining halls still have healthy options, but it’s up to the student to decide this for him/herself.

I do agree it is about portion control. There isn’t a need to eat three huge meals a day. Although important, it is not necessary. Also, try walking further distances rather than parking close.
